Description & Services

Information November 2022 - Following Hurricane Fiona, volunteers have cleared trees from the trail. Several boardwalks, bridges and railings are damaged. The trail had to be re-routed in a few spots and is a little rough in places. Devil's Bend Trail is passable with caution. Devil's Bend Trail meanders through valleys and high atop sandstone cliffs, along the Economy River to Economy Falls. The trail offers wonderful views of the river from cliffs as high as 50 m, including the Devil's Bend look-off where you can see sandstone that is sculpted by wind and rain into an intricate series of wave-like cornices. Other sections of the trail run along the rich floodplain and riparian zone. The trail winds through mature forests of maple, beech, birch, red spruce and hemlock. Hikers may spot black bear, white-tailed deer, birds of prey including bald eagles, songbirds and a variety of wildflowers. Economy Falls is at the north end of the trail. Most of this trail is within the Economy River Wilderness Area. Length: 6.6 km one-way (linear) Permitted use: hiking Trail surface: soil/footpath Rating: "moderate" difficulty, steep sections Significant Features: wilderness views, challenging climbs, quiet riverside meadows, wildlife, wildflowers, mature forests Recommended season: June to October Directions: To access the trail, follow Route 2 to Economy. Turn North onto River Phillip Road (unpaved road, rough sections), follow road and signs for 3 km to Devil's Bend Trail parking area (south end of trail), or 7 km to Economy Falls parking area (near north end of trail).
