Description & Services

Information Beautiful Isle Madame (population 4300) can be found on the most southeastern tip of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Geographically it is located near the Strait of Canso, Cape Breton’s gateway to the world. Isle Madame’s population is scattered amongst a number of rural and coastal villages and is proud to be called a designated French culture region with 70% of the population being bilingual.

Historically, it was fish that brought Acadian and Irish settlers to Isle Madame. Fishing since the 1700's has been the mainstay to the island's people. But with a down turn in the island’s fishery in the early 1990s, Isle Madame was faced with a challenge of survival. Rather than collapsing under the woes of such change, the people of Isle Madame chose a path to self-renewal. Community Economic Development (CED) procedures and protocols were introduced as the objective for long-term growth and development.

Today, Isle Madame prides itself as a community of strength, resilience and innovation, turning a corner from a resource-based economy to a knowledge and service-based economy with significant business advantages.
