Description & Services

Information Located in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, this trail is well kept and fairly easy hiking. The trailhead is located just beyond the Keltic Lodge. The hike follows a peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. Interpretative signs explain the human history of this area as well the flora and fauna. Notice how the hardy vegetation has adapted to this windswept environment: the stunted trees, the waxy leaves and plants like bayberry growing low to the ground to avoid the cutting winds. The most glorious sights on this trail are to be seen at the end, when the path deposits you atop a cliff, with the Atlantic waters crashing below. From here you can look to the right over South Bay and see the end of Cape Smokey trail. Bald Eagles, Gulls, Cormorants, Guillemots and other seabirds frequent the tip of this trail. If you explore the area around the end of the peninsula you will find scenery reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. You could explore this peninsula for hours and still find new beauty. This is a coastal and woodland trail that is 3.8 km (2.4 mi) return and is mostly level with short climbs and some rocky, rugged sections. Visit our website for further details.
