Description & Services

Information

The Summerville & District Volunteer Fire Department is made up of approximately 30 members who fill a number of different roles. Members not only respond to fire, rescue and medical calls but also put on various community events and fundraisers. It is a great way to be involved in your community.

To be a member you must reside within our service area. As a member you will have the opportunity to participate in events like Fire Prevention Week, the Elf Run, regular Fish Supper & Jam Nights, and more. Members in good standing will also have access to recreational facilities at the hall. Qualifying members also receive both federal and provincial benefits.

Training is provided bi-weekly on Thursday evenings and is your opportunity to work together as a team while learning how and when to use all the various equipment and tools we have. Training topics are of a huge variety and often include vehicle extrication with hydraulic tools (often referred to as the Jaws of Life), SCBA interior search & rescue and fire attack, basic pumper operation, hose and nozzle handling, and communications. Members are also asked to attend our regular monthly meeting.

Firefighter:
As a Firefighter you have the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills for the operations of fire apparatus , water & ice rescue, vehicle extrication, and basic fire fighting.

Medical First Responder (MFR):
To become a medical first responder you are required to complete a 40 hour provincially recognized training program. An MFR may then qualify for registration by Emergency Health Services (EHS). MFR’s can maintain certification through EHS by attending continuing education seminars.

Jr. Firefighter:
The position of Jr. Firefighter is open to youth ages 16-18. Jr. Firefighters you participate in training sessions, emergency calls (with some restrictions) and community events.
