Information | Course Overview Autism Nova Scotia's Autism Spectrum Camp Counsellor Training aims to provide new and returning camp staff with an understanding of best practice models and approaches that can be implemented into a camp setting when supporting individuals with autism. This course will look at aspects such as; communication, social interaction, visuals and other communication supports, sensory sensitivities, restricted and repetitive behaviours, behavioural supports, planning, supporting transitions, changes in routine and gaining an understanding of complex behaviours through a behavioural based lens. Who Should Take the Course The course is designed for staff and volunteers working in a camp based setting with individuals with autism, including but not limited to: both new and returning camp counsellors, senior leaders, inclusion staff, camp coordinators, and camp directors. Course Objectives The purpose of the course is to provide a foundation of understanding in supporting individuals with autism in a camp based setting that allows camp staff to build upon when working within the camp setting. The course is presented in 4 modules: Autism Overview Communication and Social Interaction Sensory Restricted, Repetitive Behaviours, Narrow Interestes, Changes and Transitions Evaluation Process At the end of each module, there is a test. Participants must successfully complete the test before continuing to the next module. Participants that do not achieve 100% can review the module content and try as many times as necessary to advance and complete the course. Test questions are randomly selected from a test bank, making each test unique. Upon successfully completing all modules, there is a printable certificate for your records. Course Duration This online course is self-paced. Participants may leave the course at anytime and can resume where they left off. The duration will depend on the individual participant and their prior knowledge of the subject matter. On average, the course will take between 1.5 - 2.5 hours to complete. |
