|Description & Services|
|Information||The Truro Tree Committee, in cooperation with the Town’s Parks, Recreation and Culture and Engineering and Public Works Departments worked hand in hand to create a new community garden on the site of the former St. Mary’s Elementary School playground, at 155 King St. The project was inspired by and funded in part through a CN EcoConnexions - From the Ground Up municipal greening grant.
The gardens officially opened in the spring of 2015 with 50 four foot by twelve foot raised wooden garden beds, 10 of which are higher boxes designed for mobility challenged gardeners. Individual plots are available for an annual $20 rental fee. In the spring of 2017 an additional 15 beds were added, 5 of which are higher accessible planters. A pollinator garden was also added in 2017, in cooperation with the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute (MTRI) Butterfly Club.
In addition to the 65 individual garden beds the community garden also has a secure garden shed for gardeners use and tool storage, a dedicated water supply, park benches and picnic tables for use by both gardeners and passersby travelling along The Cobequid Trail, a segment of which passes through the gardens. The Cobequid Trail is a part of Nova Scotia’s portion of The Great Trail network (formerly The Trans Canada Trail).
Finally, in the spirt of a true community garden there are plantings of arctic kiwi vine, Concord grape vines, rhubarb, 3 varieties of highbush blueberry, and a small fruit tree orchard including apple, peach, plum and pear trees. All of these plantings, as they mature, are for the free use and enjoyment of visitors and gardeners alike.
